Gardens

Guests to the Barn are welcome to enjoy the gardens that have been lovingly restored and developed over the last 15 years .

The lower and oldest part of the garden is planted with azaleas and other flowering shrubs leading into a productive fruit and vegetable garden with an avenue of espalier apple trees.

An expansive lawn bordered by a wide "hot" border of palm trees and vibrant herbaceous perennials and a rose parterre were created in 2005.  At the end of the lawn, ancient pear trees envelope the shepherd's hut "Cwt Peren".

Cwt Peren is our retreat for reading and writing (and some daytime naps!) but guests are welcome to use the benches and enjoy views towards the Carneddau mountains.

See the Gallery  for more images of the garden and Cwt Peren  throughout the seasons.

History

Llanerch y Felin is a grade II* listed Snowdonia farmhouse, built in 1565 and the oldest house in the village of Rowen.

We are members of the North Wales based charity Discovering Old Welsh Houses and the house timbers have been dated to 1570 using dendrochronology.  Records of people living at Llanerch y Felin in 1560 have been found in the Estate Papers of Cymryd, a gentry house close to the River Conwy, suggesting that Llanerch y Felin has earlier origins, possibly as a medieval Hall House, but then underwent significant changes to introduce a first floor and attic rooms in the late sixteenth century.

The attic timbers at Llanerch y Felin bear joiners' marks in the form of Roman numerals and several apotropaic "burn" marks made in medieval times to ward off evil spirits.  Other surviving features include sections of original wattle and daub in the attic rooms, oak paneling and a massive bressumer beam above the inglenook fireplace.

The house was filmed for the BBC drama series "Family at War" in the 1980s and has appeared in a photo shoot for an edition of Paris Match.

In 2011, it featured in Country Homes and Interiors magazine for its sympathetic restoration and interior decor.

We are proud to be house members of the Historic Houses Association and to be able offer a discount on visitor membership with our house code LLAN23 .

Location

Situated in the north of the Snowdonia National Park, Rowen is a peaceful village that is also easily accessible.

Guests will find coastal and mountain scenery to explore, history and culture to learn about and local food to enjoy in this friendly rural community.

Surrounded by fields and over an acre of gardens, Llanerch y Felin is the perfect starting point for hillwalking in the Carneddau mountains. The Rowen website www.rowenconwy.org.uk has leaflets for a number of walks starting at TKIP - the red telephone box now used as a tourist information point besides the Ty Gwyn Hotel.

Rowen is only 5 miles from the medieval walled town of Conwy which has excellent road and rail links with the rest of the UK. It is 10 miles from the Victorian seaside resort of Llandudno. Attractions close by include the National Trust owned Bodnant Gardens and Adventure Parc Snowdonia.

Enjoy local produce from Bodnant Welsh Food Centre just 10 minutes drive across the valley with its butchery, bakery, delicatessen and wine shop plus everyday essentials if you prefer not to travel to the coast.

Further down the Conwy Valley, the towns of Llanrwst and Betws y Coed are well worth a visit and from Blaenau Ffestiniog, a narrow gauge railway winds its way through spectacular scenery to the famous Italianate Village of Portmeirion and then onwards to Caernarfon, with its medieval castle and views of Anglesey and the Menai Straits.

Rowen is just 2 miles from the Snowdonia360 route - visit www.snowdonia360.com to find out about 29 member attractions and recommended restaurants and cafes.

Llanerch y Felin is a member of the Historic Houses Association.  Using the code LLAN23 gives a discount for joining as a Visitor Member on www.historichouses.org with free access to Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens on Anglesey and Plas Brondanw gardens near Porthmadog.
